Cheddleton Flint Mill and Churnet Valley Railway

We walked back to the Holly Bush for tea last night as the Red Lion was not serving food.  It was packed when we got there and we were not hopeful but they were still serving food including, Sunday Roast, John had lamb and I had beef, not sure if we got so much meat as it was nearing the end of service but we really couldn't complain about the amount, and the veg were all fresh so well worth the walk.

We have stayed at Cheddleton today, we have had a walk around the Flint Mill and a wander down to the railway.  Unfortunately the steam train is not operational at the moment but there were trains running with a diesel engine.  The station is a great Gothic building that was saved from the bulldozers by someone parking his brand new car in front of them when he realised what they were about to do.

At the flint mill, there are two mills on the site, originally one was a 13th century corn mill and was converted to a flint mill in the 19th century.  The flint was ground by the mills and then transported on the canal to Stoke on Trent. The water wheel was turning on one of the mills and we were able to follow the trail of how it all worked.  There is also a millers cottage that you can have a walk around downstairs.

  2. Hi Simon. We do not mind at all. What a lovely spot. First time we have done the Caldon, but not the last. A hidden gem.
